What happened?
Gmail
is adding an 'unsubscribe' button to marketing messages in your inbox so
that you can easily remove your email address from mailing lists
(bit.ly/gmail340). The button should also help companies, because many people mark
these messages as spam
when they can’t easily unsubscribe, which in turn prevents them from
getting through to the people who do want them. It also makes it harder for
Google to tell real spam from marketing.
How
will it affect you?
The
unsubscribe option is being rolled out to all Gmail users and will appear
directly in your inbox. This means you won’t have to open an email to block future
mail, or depend on companies to include an unsubscribe link in their marketing messages.
What
do I think?
This
is a clever way for Google to help users and businesses. So-called ‘grey mail’
marketing messages can be annoying to deal with. Microsoft’s OutIook.com has a
handy ‘sweeping’ feature that cleans such clutter from your inbox and were
pleased that Google has come up with its own solution, because there’s nothing
worse than logging Into an inbox that’s overflowing with useless messages.
