Chrome has taken a lot of flak in
recent weeks for storing saved passwords in plain text. Firefox has been doing
the same thing for years. If you’re bothered by it, you can switch off password
saving.
In Chrome, go to Settings, click ‘Show
advanced settings’ and untick ‘Offer to save passwords’. To clear any or all of
your stored passwords, click ‘Manage saved passwords’.
In Firefox, you can add an extra layer
of security by creating a master password in Preferences. Alternatively, use a
secure password manager such as LastPass. You can download it
free to your computer or add it to Firefox (bit.ly/lastfox326) or Chrome
(bit.ly/lastchrome326). Be warned: when I added it to Chrome, it wiped all my saved
passwords! Copy all your passwords to a text document, store them all in
LastPass and remember to securely delete the text file.
